Frequently Asked Questions
Where is it available?
Does it save money? It should do for many!
According to the Daily Telegraph (28/9/12), "Homebuyers now rank a fast broadband connection above off-street parking and local amenities when considering a new property".
Modern movers rely on the internet so much for work and leisure that a good connection speed can even add 5 per cent to a property's value.
What is synchronous broadband? Fast both ways!
Normal broadband is asynchronous: you typically get a 10x faster download than upload. Synchronous gives the same upload and download speeds. Great for video conferencing, and sending or uploading larger files.
What is a VoIP phone? The future!
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a way to make cheaper calls to normal and VoIP phones anywhere in the world using the interne, with the convenience of a phone handset. It’s the future now.
Moneysupermarket say “It is now difficult to tell the difference between a regular phone call and a VoIP to phone network call”. More (accessed 11/6/12).
Can I really give up my BT phone line? Yes if you want to save money!
Yes, you should be able to. After all, the BT network is based on Internet protocol itself. What this means is that you can use the entire Internet structure. To give you reassurance, what we recommend is that you keep the BT service running for two or three months in order to convince yourself. And if you find that the VoIP service doesn't work, then you can end it.
Otherwise, find you can cancel your landline rental and save on phone charges.
If I use VoIP, will I lose my telephone number? No!
BT & most providers allow you to keep your old phone number.
Will I lose my BTconnect email address? Probably not.
Ask for the account to be downgraded to Pay As You Go and you will still have access to your BT Connect email address. As long as no other services are left on the account this will then be free of charge. Don’t forget to use your email at least once every 90 days or the account will be cancelled.
Alternatively, sign up to BT’s Yahoo Premium Email Service (http://alturl.com/9ehz6). The service, priced at £1.54 a month, will allow you to access your BT account, even when signed up to another ISP.
You should wait at least seven days after you have left BT to subscribe to this service (call 0800 633 5335 and select option 3).
Or, find freedom: think about the benefit of a portable email address, like .me.uk, googlemail or Apple’s me.com.
Better still, promote our local service with a Stoddenworld or Redraw email address. Contact us for details.
Do I lose my e-mail address with other email address providers?
Many or most providers do enable you to keep your e-mail address, possibly with a nominal payment, like BT. You will need to check.
You can also get a new e-mail address but arrange for the old one to forward to it. In that case you can take advantage of one of the more flexible e-mail addresses, like Gmail/Googlemail, or Apples me.com, or our own, and not be tied to a single supplier.
If you get information about specific providers, let us know and we'll add it for other people's information.
